Attendance

Good attendance at school is so important for all round life chances.

At Sir Robert Geffery’s, we work with children and families to promote the best possible attendance.  Our attendance policy (below) outlines our approach.  We ask families to recognise that good to excellent attendance is in the very best interests of their child’s education, social and emotional wellbeing and ultimately, life chances. We endeavour to make each and every day engaging and exciting and the children have told us that they don’t want to miss a day of school if they can help it!  We thank parents for their support.

Please note the following related to term-time holiday requests (further covered in the Attendance Policy):The school will require parents to observe the school holidays as prescribed; therefore, the headteacher will be unable to authorise holidays during term-time in all but exceptional cases. The headteacher will be only allowed to grant a leave of absence in very exceptional circumstances. Applications will be made in advance. If parents take their child out of school during term-time without authorisation from the headteacher, they may be subject to sanctions such as penalty fines. Parents are informed, through various means and including the school newsletter and request form, of the following legal statement:

I understand that if the absence request is unauthorised, the school may request that Cornwall Council issue a Penalty Notice.  I understand that a Penalty Notice is issued to each liable parent/carer of each child taken out of school and that this carries a fine of £60 if paid within 21 days, increasing to £120 if paid within 28 days.  I understand that if I do not pay the fine, it may result in legal action being taken against me.  I understand that parents have a duty to ensure their child’s regular attendance at school and failure to do so is an offence under Section 444(1) and Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996.
