Last week, Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from Jake Corin from Symbiosis soil labs. The workshop helped the children learn about the delicate balance of microbiology in soils and how we can play a major part in maintaining it. The children then had a live microbiology session where they collected samples from different areas of the school grounds and examined the tiny creatures within them. We found nematodes, fungi and bacteria all wiggling on the screen! It was like being in a secondary school science lesson … or even a laboratory!
Additionally, we were able to watch video of other micro-organisms including tardigrades (water bears!) Jake was very impressed with their enthusiasm, curious questions and fantastic knowledge of ecology.
The children took home a pledge card for how they will seek to help the world’s soil in the future.
Thank you to Hayley from Cornwall Climate Care for helping to organise. A brilliant afternoon!
