Over this year, children from different classes have visited local farms. The visits have helped them learn about where their food comes from and developed their understanding of a range of future jobs and careers locally and nationally linked to farming.
Year 5 recently visited Maders Farm, near Callington. They met Catherine and Jeremy whose family have been farming the land for generations. They learnt about the care for the livestock, how the land is managed and investigated how this year’s lavender harvest has been affected by unknown causes.
Catherine explained how the sheds and barns are used to help look after the animals, including the birth this spring of 180 lambs. Children made links to the care of our school sheep on our own farm.
The children learnt about the harvesting of lavender flowers and how the farm have used distilling to make lavender oil. They had to be detectives to try to help the farmers work out why many of the lavender plants had died this year.
We also looked at their family allotment and ‘magpied’ ideas for our no-dig beds here at school for next year.
